Find Your Bluesky Friends

This post is especially for those folks coming to Dreamwidth from Bluesky, who may wish to reconnect with other people they know from that venue.

Bluesky is currently facing a bunch of different issues. This is causing many users to leave the platform and seek a new one, some of whom are coming to Dreamwidth. Use the "Introduction / Friending Meme" to say hello and meet new people here.

If you haven't quit Bluesky yet but plan to, then it's a good idea to make a farewell post on Bluesky NOW while you still can. Tell people where else to find you online, whether your account is moving or closing, and any other important details.

Use this post to tell folks that you are on Dreamwidth, what your Bluesky account was, and who you're looking for here that you knew back there. You can use the template in a comment below, on your blog, or anywhere else you find it useful. This one is shorter than the more detailed "Introduction / Friending Meme" is.

Trouble Brewing at Bluesky

A number of issues at Bluesky have many members looking for a different venue, some of whom are moving to Dreamwidth. Watch for those folks and invite them here to learn more about this platform. If you have friends who are leaving Bluesky, encourage them to consider Dreamwidth -- it's not a close match but does have good privacy and moderation tools, and you can use it for short-form posting if you wish. This post contains resources about how to use Dreamwidth. You can find your Bluesky friends here.

Is anyone here familiar with Bluesky? We could really use a "Dreamwidth for Bluesky Users" guide post.

Early Humans

The hidden Denisovan gene that helped humans conquer a new world

Ancient humans crossing the Bering Strait into the Americas carried more than tools and determination—they also carried a genetic legacy from Denisovans, an extinct human relative. A new study reveals that a mysterious gene called MUC19, inherited through interbreeding between Denisovans, Neanderthals, and humans, may have played a vital role in helping early Americans survive new diseases, foods, and environments.

Diversity is strength.

Birdfeeding

Today is partly sunny and mild.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.  I heard a bluejay screaming but didn't see it.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 10/8/25 -- I did some work around the patio.

I saw a male cardinal in the forest garden.

EDIT 10/8/25 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 10/8/25 -- I gathered sunflower seeds and wild senna seeds from the gardens.

EDIT 10/8/25 -- I watered the irises, telephone pole garden and savanna seedlings, new picnic table, and old picnic table.

As it is almost suppertime, I am done for the night.

Good News

Good news includes all the things which make us happy or otherwise feel good. It can be personal or public. We never know when something wonderful will happen, and when it does, most people want to share it with someone. It's disappointing when nobody is there to appreciate it. Happily, blogging allows us to share our joys and pat each other on the back.

What good news have you had recently? Are you anticipating any more? Have you found a cute picture or a video that makes you smile? Is there anything your online friends could do to make your life a little happier?

An Apology to Our Readers

It has come to our attention that some episodes of Steven Universe were previously listed as being viewed on the incorrect date.

This oversight has been corrected, and we apologize to any of our readers who were inconvenienced by these inaccuracies.

Green Burial

Traditional burials are bad for the planet. So this woman created her own 'cocoon coffin' made of seaweed instead

Ultimately, she made her own — a fully compostable, translucent “bioplastic” material made out of seaweed. Creating this material even led Kostur to use it in fashion accessories and wedding floral displays, which is now how she spends most of her time professionally.

This is one of the very few modern funeral displays that meets or exceeds the splendor of some historic ones.  Plus the symbolism is extremely helpful.
